2020 Crete Census Data Released

The preliminary 2020 Census data has been released and is showing growth in Crete over the last decade. From a population of 8,259 in 2010, Crete is now home to 8,465 people, the 2020 results show.

“GOOD NEWS!!,” Crete Mayor Michael Einhorn said in a Facebook post, “Thanks everyone for participating and doing your part to make sure we received an accurate count.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the actual number is likely higher, due to a 10%-20% participation decline compared to previous years – which the Census Bureau blames on the COVID-19 pandemic.

As previously outlined in this PSA video with the mayors of Beecher, Crete, Monee, Peotone and University Park, there are many reasons why accurate census data is so important:

• It plays a role in congressional representation and districts.
• It determines amount of state and federal funds communities receive.
• It helps government and private sector plan for infrastructure and education needs.
• It determines grant size for fire and police departments.

The census takes place every ten year and the next one is scheduled for April 1, 2030.

Thank You Crete Veterans

Crete is proud of the many men and women who have sacrificed for their community and country. This Veterans Day, four such men from Crete shared their story:

  • Arthur Chavez, Vietnam.
  • Raymond Meredith, Korea.
  • Fred Rickman, WW2.
  • Edward Wojtczak, Vietnam.

Many thanks to Chuck Eckel, volunteer for Honor Flight Chicago, for helping with the project.

2020 Census: Support Your Community

Did you know that the Village of Crete forfeits $171.84 in tax revenue from the State of Illinois, for every person in Crete who doesn’t fill out the 2020 Census? The Census money is earmarked for things like local law enforcement and public works.

Now imagine that one percent of Crete, or 83 people, don’t participate in the census. That’s $14,192.00. But what if it’s 20% of residents that don’t fill out the Census? The lost revenue is now $284,000.00, which might result in reduced law enforcement resources and more potholes in Crete roads.

The good news is that, with your help, there’s still time to avoid any potential issues. All you need to do is go to 2020census.gov before October 5th and fill out the form. You can also call 844-330-2020 and complete the process by phone.

The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential, so don’t worry about your answers being published.

If you’ve already completed the census, awesome! Thank you! If you could still help spread the word and maybe gently nudge any procrastinators around you and share the Census website or phone number with them, we’d really appreciate that too!

And remember, the deadline for the 2020 Census is October 5th, and the next Census is not until 2030, so we gotta make this one count. Go #TeamCrete!
